All of my guys carry theirs. They use them as money clips. The other reason is some of the area busniess give a FF discount. Show your badge.

Go very far out and a badge is pretty much target pratice for whomever has a beef with cops.

May I ask why a FF would need a wallet badge? Do FF go up to people and identify themselves as an off duty FF?

Could giving FF's wallet badges cause more of this?

The badge of a firefighter is the Maltese Cross. This Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor.  Early American Fire Department wore badges to signify their department affiliation.  Over the years the badge has changed into a symbol of rank.  Most departments wear the badge on their dress uniform and carry it in a leather case off duty.  Once upon a time the badge identified the person as a Firefighter, although now the badge has to be accompinaied by a photo ID.

I have every badge for each rank I ever held.  They are some of my most prized possessions, because of the pride I had to have earned them.

My feelings are FF don't need badges to carry around. Yes one on a class A uniform is about all we need.

In todays world,We DO need to have some type of ID.

My County has ID cards you carry around your neck.(or pocket) These ID's can get you in and around a lot of places.ie; Our E.O.C.

Secure areas and so forth.

We got T-shirts, and a few dress shirts are kept at the station for when we're making a public outing, or going to be in the newspaper (which is a pretty big day, if some of you know Whitton Fire Department) :)

We get a badge that's for dress uniform. Don't wear them much.  We wear t-shirts or turn out gear. I carry my badge in my pocket.  A pic. id. would better.

Firefighter Badges to me are more a symbol of honor much like those in the military such as the Paratrooper Jump Wings, the Special Warfare insignia, and Flight Wings.

I've still got my very first badge as a jr. and 3 of my Dads badges.  They are on my profile. I wish I had all of my Dad's badges and rank but they're gone or missing.   The badge represents membership to a family of life savers and protectors.   It also means to me dedication, honor , courage and sacrafice.   I carry mine with pride even though an id with it would be helpful.

i believe that all Fire Depts. should have the traditional badge, in place of the picture badge. If you think of it, how long is a picture badge goin to last compared to a traditonal medal badge. not too long and if the traditoinal badge is how the FD started out i believe the tradition should be kept up

There is still a need for Proper and Current ID and Credentails, because some people are not who they say they are!   When I am deployed to a diasaster,  I always take along all my Identification papers and copies of all my credentials and certifications (the masters can be checked on-line).  I have seen a growing number of imposters trying to get on-site for some reason or another.  It is a sad that some would do this.

Yeah ,  people that are nosey or just want to steal.  people that want the inside scoop on a story, freelancers that are in to get some glory, arsonist who want to mess up the crime scene. Someone who wants power to have there way, just to name a few.   A badge is easy to get so as a id it's not the best.  It has more symbolic importance than id .  It's still useful too but good card id's are harder to fake.

yeah thats true, i forgot how many screw up people are out there now a days. I was just talkin about that yesterday, about how sometimes you dont know if a person coming up to you is really who they say they are. Now a days you can buy a firefighter uniform and patches and whetever you need on ebay.. so they maky look the part but how do you really know with out ID. but i completely agree with you on that 100% at first when i read it i thought it was referring to something else. Im not with the fire dept yet i still have to call the city to see when the next civil service test will be given, so i can get a move on with it. after that i'll probably go talk to my cousin about the job to see if he can help any due to being a lieutenent in the cleve fire dept.

the reason I ask is this.....Some departments in our area do the badge wallet thing, some do just the t-shirts, some do t-shirts and dress uniform with badge (like mine)  I was wondering to see if it is a common thing to have in fire departments as far as wallet badges go.  Here, we don't have ID cards, so a wallet badge would be appropriate I would think.  Our badges have our rank, department and city/state on them so it's not one that can simply be bought on eBay.  thanks for all of the replies!!  I found it to be of mixed opinions mostly.

yeah im goin to give the city hall a call to see when the next test will be given i don't know why but i have the site giving the dates for other places, but cleveland has to be complicated its always been like that here. I have to look at the hireing process too because 2 weeks ago i read a article saying that the Cleveland FD ahs been hireing the ones who put applications in durrning the years of 1999 and 2000 so we'll see,

I have mixed emotions about this. Yes badges are a symbol of honor, pride and tradition. Unfortunately there are just too many idiots out there nowadays. I can see the reasons for a Maltese Cross style badge for dress uniforms, but not for any other purpose. I know on policelink the topic of badges  for anyone other than LEOs is a very hot topic with most agreeing that it's not a good idea.

Nowadays a photo ID/Credentials card makes much more sense. Just my humble opinion...
