So for the last few months I have been preparing to apply for the Cleveland fire department, because I read that they will be hiring about 50 firefighters next year. Well, yesterday a friend shared this article with me:

http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/121749305053151.xml&coll=2

Does this mean that they aren't looking for anyone that has RECENTLY applied and they are ONLY considering people that applied in the last 10 years?? I'm confused by all that and wondering if this is normal for departments to do.......

If that is what is going on, it's pretty depressing. For me at least, not for all the other applicants from previous years....Congrats to you all if you happen to be on FireLink!!

It kind of sounds that way, but even if it is, I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt many of them are still looking for work.

Dunno, that is weird. I have never seen that situation before.

it sounds pretty bizarre that ANY government entity has NOT hired in 10 years !?!?!?!

Wow. I have not a clue what they are looking for by reading that article. Very oddly written.

Like everyone else.....this article is weird. I wonder if a lawsuit held up the test for the passed 10 year.

Either way, I still apply....the worst they can do is tell you no, but if you don't submit an app you'll never have a chance.

Sounds a lot like a contractual agreement.  They offered positions to these canidates and the positions never developed due to cut backs and reduction in staffing.   People who retired or left the department for any reason were not replaced.  By offering these position now the City can avoid a Breach of Contract lawsuit.  Evem though 38 said they would accept the offer, my guess is only a handful will accept the offer.  Most after 10 years have moved on in search of their own dreams and ambitions.  Think about it if...you had been placed on hold for 10 years would you still be waiting ?

If I have learned anything in Fire Service in the last 24 years...It is that things happen for a reason.  Have faith, train hard, and never give up on your ambition and dreams!!!

That is a normal situation, at least from what I've seen. A lot of full-time departments, will make you take their test and jump through the all of the other hoops to get on, however they still may not hired for months or years from then. I think a lot of it has to do with their turn over and the amount of jobs that open up at that time.

I know Chicago Fire Department just finished a list from 1995 in like late 2005. Thats 10 years, and yes, a lot of people were still willing to accept that job offfer!
