Just wondering how things differ...

Posted 3 months ago I was just kind of wondering how things differ state to state, or dept by dept as far as what kind of credentials one should have before a dept will hire them. All around me are volunteer depts so it's kind of hard to ask. I guess what I am trying to ask is is there a certain number of years you have to put in, or a certain number of calls you have to have been on before a paid dept will even look at hiring you on? I know a lot are now looking for people who have been through the fire academy but are there companies that take volunteers and put them on the paid side of things by what they have done or years they have put in? I am very content where I am at and love what I do, it was just a question I have been wanting to ask for a long time. Thanks. |

| Posted 3 months ago our dept. only does on the job training and well have some training nights 2 do things on but they are not required 2 do physicals or have any background in fire science but they do do background checks on people that are new but ill be one of them that wont have 2 be put on a calling list u could say but we dont have 2 many that actually want 2 volunteer no the closest city dickson you must pass an enterance exam 2 get in there and on there volunteer team. but they also have a rescue squad and i belive 9 or 10 districts. |

| Posted 3 months ago Most of the larger, paid departments around here will hire you with no certification and no experience and then put you through their "rookie school". Of course if you already have your FF cert or if you are already and EMT it helps. The volunteer departments will take you without certs and train you as you go. The largest room is the room for self improvement |

| Posted 3 months ago The way the Fire Dept. i am on now is, you have to at least have your EMT-Basic license and they will send you to everything else. Of course the more you have before you apply is a plus. I think you have to have a certain amount of training before your rookie year is up, like HAZMAT- Awareness, ff1, and something else. |
