well as much as i've picked at others about it for a while, I've finally had it happen to me. For about the past two i've been itchin like crazy for a call, and finally got one last night a lil after 11. I was so happy, i flew out the house and right when i got the station, dispatch finally announced it as a cat in the tree. I was so pissed off me and my buddy wanted to go home, my buddy especially bein that he had to get up at 5 in the morning to take his emt exam, well after some callin to the chief and others, we decide to go to it well the chief told us to just put a ladder in the brush truck and bring it and as we're tryin to load it up, we're told to disregard it which sucks cause we had a time gettin the ladder to the truck bein that we had a limited amount of space. Then we got a call from the chief who tells us to just c'mon with our second-out truck cause the cat was still in the tree. Finally, we get over there get the cat out, and get the ladders packed back up and honestly i felt pretty good about it even though it was what it was. This was for the simple fact that it was a lil hispanic girls cat and the smiles and grins the chief got when he gave it back to her, even though that cat was prolly gonna go right back up that tree sometime soon.

Setting up a 2 1/2 monitor line would have gave you more satisfaction, I bet.  LOL Cat-in-tree call.  Classic.

Did you feel bad after seeing the smiles on that little girls face that you were mad about the call at 1st? We all have days like this about calls. Just glad you could help make someones day er night.

Feels good to ba able to help. While it was not a big deal to you, it was an emergency to the lil' girl.  Although.......I have never seen a cat skeleton in a tree.....

As in all aspect of life . it's hard to find a balance.  I view animal rescues important for a number of reasons. One reason is because it gives hands on experience and training that can be used in saving human life.  Second is the good relations in your community ,which helps with funding ,when you have that support. You become heros in the eyes of young ones and that gives them someone to imulate other that your local punks.  I could go on and on.  If you have a problem with call abuse for unnessery calls, ie tying up equipment added expense ; then community education with animal control or other animal experts could help.   Organizing vollis., with training ,willing to help in such matters is useful too.

The reason I am glad that on the dive team we go and get the animals out of the river or lakes or on frozen ice is to prevent someone that is not trained to do so, go and do it and then they end up injured or dead. I will gladly get a cat out of a tree if it will prevent that little girl /boy or adult from trying to climb it to do it her/his self and then we get a medical call or worse.

After all we are here to serve the community and it makes us look good in their eyes.

My department had a Parrot rescued from a Tree - domestic bird that couldltn fly well enough to get down.

We use our Ladder truck and naturally the news paper took a bunch of pics, fortunately the reported made it a positive event.

Like Froogsey said we are here to serve our communities, the call won't always be fires or accidents but at least everyone knows we'll be there no matter what.

ok now i fully understand it bein a domesticated bird but if it had been anything else i would have laughed my tail off at the caller, "i need someone to come rescue this bird! he's stuck in a tree!!!" lol

I used to volunteer at the Grand Saline Fire Dept. (shoutout GSFD!!!) and we had a call for a cat stuck in a dry well. It was right when i got on, and firefighting was all new to me still, so I was gung-ho to go on any call.  Like JC said, its all about public relations and just being nice. And, I'm pretty sure that the cat could not have gotten out of that well by itself.   It ended up being a safe rescue for the cats and for us, and the well was filled in to keep it from happening to any animal or human ever again. Adn, the department probably got a pretty good donation from the family of that cat when the time came around to donate to your local volunteer fire department.
