Posted 4 months ago We are looking to put a GPS in each of our apparatus due to our responses to mutual aid companies in our surrounding areas. I am looking for suggestions on what model to purchase. I am looking for something with an External Antenna Jack so we can mount the GPS's in a safe and inconspicuous location for the Driver and Or Operator to view it . We are not looking to spend alot on each if possible. We were thinking around $200 each. We need to purchase 6 of them. We would like to somehow mount it permamently so they can not walk away from the apparatus. Maybe dash mount them somehow. Any and all assistance would be appreciated. Keith Badler

| Posted 4 months ago the garmin 650 is the best bang for the buck. while it may be 100 more than what you want to spend, it has the most current updates. for and addt'l 100, it will give you auto traffic updates. if you have computers in your apparatus for box assignments and other info, you can add gps to them for only 100 thru microsoft streets and trips. that is what i use at work. |

| Posted 4 months ago The TomTomXL isn't a bad deal, I actually have one in my POV, and the extra large screen is quite helpful. Also with TomTom it's fairly idiot proof. I got real time traffic updates, and have it set up with a map which has all fire stations marked. You can set it to display all stations, or only central stations. It ran two hundred, but usually circuit city has some on sale for about $150.00. |

| Posted 4 months ago We have a Garmin GPS unit in every truck in our dept. The only time they are used for is when we need to have a Air Med. We just give them coordinates and they find us every time. We have alot of back woods country roads, so we have Hilo land in fields and roads. "Hell, these are Marines. Men like them held Guadalcanal and took Iwo Jima. Bagdad ain't shit." "Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem." United States Marine Corps |

| Posted 4 months ago If you use notebooks in your rigs I'd recommend getting a good quality GPS like the Garmin GPS 18 USB or PC if you need serial. There are also the new SiRF3 devices that are available are the best they can lock into a signal with even a marginal view of the sky or from inside. If your not using notebooks in your truck then I would recommend units with built-in maps. Nuvio is a great device with a good bang for the buck kind of deal. You will want something that you can upload files of your needs to. I would want to upload hydrant locations, air evac locales, low clearance needs, etc... Furthermore, if you use a notebook you can have TOPO maps which can greatly assist in SAR work or use Google Earth or similar programs and put buildings on your maps. Then you can start having the cool looking toys that are available to Hollywood actors. :) Eric M. Gildersleeve

| Posted 4 months ago I have the Garmin Quest II and I love it! It has a handy dash mount and is also small enough to fit in your pocket for foot navagation! It is superb for Firefighting, travel, and the family. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=338 Eddie D. Howard
