As I sit here on my lunch break I read the story about a 45 yr old man and a 5-6 yr old boy jumping from a burning apartment building  It brung up a old picture and a cartoon of the fire dept holding up a large trampolene or a fishing net type safety catch system.  Whatever happen to such devices were they ever sucessful or did the ladder trucks take over such? Or were these just pictures and were never used.  But thats just my thought answer if you know.

I'm not entirely sure.  The only times I've seen them used are cartoons, or some movies, like Mr Deeds.  But it seems like they might have worked for some things.

At first glance of the title  Ithought you ment getting a trampoline installed in the station.

perhaps this is too technical, or perhaps the physics person could answer .... but would the FFs be able to hold onto the tramp with the force of the fall?  or, how many would it take (trying to avoid the joke line) would it take to hold on to withstand the force?  they had this at the end of Jackass 2 in their grand finale sing song

It's all based on the highest bidder. He/she gets caught.

Seriously, I saw this on some old movies and TV shows. Theoretically, it could work. The number of firefighters would need to be great enough so that they had enough strength to withstand the force of the impact. (I know, I know. I went to an engineering school). It could work.

1. suicider

(n) one that suicides, is currently in the process of suiciding, or has suicided in the past

"Freedom will prevail, so long as the United States and allies don't give the people of Iraq mixed signals, so long as we don't cower in the face of suiciders, or do what many Iraqis still suspect might happen, and that is cut and run early, like what happened in '91" - George W. Bush (quoted by Bill Sammon in The Washington Times 5/10/04)

2. suicider

A person who commits suicide, particularly one who carries explosives or drives an explosive-packed vehicle to kill others along with himself, aka a suicide bomber.

The word suicider is one of many new words to have been coined by George W. Bush, the current US President.

These people don't have tanks. They don't have ships. They hide in caves. They send suiciders out.

From the Urban Word Dictionary. So Slaco yes it is an official unofficial word.

Now on to the topic. Aside from movies and cartoons I have never seen one. But I was talking a few years ago with a retired FF and he said they actually trained with one for fun. It took all the guys at the dept to hold on to it for 1 person to jump off a ladder that was on the 2nd story. Not sure how many guys though, I don't remember.

My volunteeer fire department had one stuffed in a corner of the bay. No one can recall ever actually using it but, they did carry it on the truck through the 70s. I've only heard of one being used one time for an actual fire took 8 fire fighters to hold on to it and it wasn't from all that great of a height but, they couldn't get the ladder to stay on the metal siding.

Funny if I recall correctly in Season 3 or 4 of Emergency! with Squad 51 they used it on a fire.

I was told they used it more as a privacy screen or during incidents to shelter a patient during the rain than anything else.

I cannot believe that you actually had one of those at your fingertips and never tried it. If we had that in my station today, I can tell you that we would have a LONG line to try it. As station officer, of course, I would be in front. I wouldn't want anyone else to have fun that I hadn't experienced. We would have many hours of training on that thing. I wonder what FDC number would apply.

So, does anyone have one of those that we can try??? We will come to you. I gotta do this.

Good reason NOT to have a tramp around .

Anyway , I never saw one of those tramps at my department.   I do recall those wind bags being used by a few departments.    However My Dad said he had them both at his station and now I call her Dear.

If you look carefully, you will find tramps and windbags around EVERY station. Be careful.

I don't think many building were above 2 stories in those days. Here's some articles I found in the net.

The only thing I see wrong when using a trampoline would be when the pt falls and hits the trampoline then bounces back up 2stories and then lands on concrete.

I think then you need Olympic Officials there to judge the dismount!

That's great! When they hit the trampolene you better have a safety net of something to catch the perosn after they bounce back up.

I googled and came up with nothing. I tried to find pics or video. I am sure there has to be at least one out there.

Anyway does anyone have one. We could make our own video. I would jump out a window and try it! Just make sure there are plenty of mattresses all around. lol

Does anyone else remember the Ren and Stimpy cartoon where they were firefighters? The had a trampoline and some lady started throwing all kinds of “pets” out of the window…..and then the lady jumped too. Anyone else remember, or am I the only “special” one here?

We could get a really sticky trampoline.
