I myself do not have asthma, but my brother n law has sever asthma problems and he's still preforms great on the dept. He didn't have any trouble getting hired. He has trouble doing firefighting activities sometimes but when he's fighting fire he has no problems because he's wearing an SCBA so it doesn't bother him any. I'm sure all the smoke  would bother him but it would bother everyone else too so that's why we wear SCBA's. Different fire depts may look at it differently.

Alot will depend on how much you can handle with and without a SCBA and the severity of your Asthma. Even those with mild Asthma have had hard time with FF and I seen a FF with it really bad do just great. So it really depends on you and what you can do.

I do have severe athsma and take daily medication for this. i also have a rescue inhailer that i keep in the abulance and every one on my dept. is aware of my condition. i will say that i have only had a problome 1 time, and i have been around awile, not a real long time but almost a tenyear. the one time i had issues was on a brush/grass fire. i find that this is the biggest issue for fire fighters that are asthmatics. if you have to, buy a respirator for grass/brush fires. they will put you down for the count, do not ask me why, but that smoke reeps havic on your lungs.  RB
