EMS:  Emergency Medical Services- What we provide

EMT: Emergency Medical Technician- What we are

There are several levels available: First Responder, EMT-B (basic) EMT-I (intermediate) EMT-P (paramedic). Some states offer other levels also. Check with your local area to see if they offer First Responder or EMT-B as this is where you start at. The world of EMS can be very rewarding and challenging at times, Do your research before jumping right in. Since you profile says that your a volunteer for a fire dept- what training does your dept offer and ask about their EMS training preference.

In Michigan, I know we have MFRs (First Responders) EMT-B (Basic) EMT-S ( Specialist) also know as Intermediate and EMT-P ( Paramedic)... my fire dept. runs Non-transport MFR for 4 counties since we are on the countylines of all 4

It all depends on what you want to do.  Do you want to be a firefighter/paramedic?  Just a paramedic?  Just a firefighter?  Some places require their firefighters to be at least MFRs if not EMT-Bs.  Check with your local department to see what they expect their personnel to have.

Another question to ponder...Does your fire department run QRS or EMS. If your department only runs QRS you could get away with just a 1st Responder, but if you run EMS and are a BLS ambulance, you may want to consider getting your EMT. Being a medic is completely up to you. Another thing to take into consideration is time. How much time do you have to devote to a class? If you don't have much time to devote, maybe a 1st Responder course is more fitting. The EMT course is about 6 months, for example, my class was 2 nights a week, 4 hours each with two 8 hour Saturday sessions. And, if you have alot of time the medic course is about double the EMT course. But ultimately it's all up to you, unless like emtjad said your department requires a certain certification.

Wow!!  What the heck is QRS (other than the complex)?  If you choose EMS, you can be a B, I, or P, if P then either an E or a CC.  You will definately need to know what PQRST is, as well as MONA, OPQRST, ASA, MS, and the ever popular SAMPLE.  However we don't want to not include AVPU, DCAPBTLS, BVM, BSI, BP, and the most important of all, ABC's.

BLP is right, find out what your dept provides, and most importantly what level you wish to obtain, and go from there.  Ask around, talk to the guys/gals you look up to, they are a wealth of knowledge.

Just a little fun there with the acronyms there,,  had a flashback to the Robin Williams movie "Good Morning Vietnam"....

Oh and QRS is 'Quick Response Service'. Basically for a department that doesn't have an ambulance or only has first responders. I'm sure you've all heard people say, "I QRP'd that call."
