| Description: | A Halligan bar (also called a Halligan tool or simply Halligan, in Australia also a Hooligan tool) is a special tool commonly used in the fire and rescue service. It was designed by and named after Hugh Halligan, a First Deputy Fire Chief in the New York City Fire Department, in 1948, based upon the well known Kelly tool.[1] The Halligan is a multipurpose tool for prying, twisting, punching, or striking. It consists of a claw (or fork), a blade (wedge or adze), and a tapered pick, which is especially useful in quickly forcing open many types of locked doors. Either the adz end or fork end of the tool can be used to break through the latch of a swinging door by forcing the tool between the door and doorjamb and prying the two apart, striking it with another Halligan, a Denver tool or a flat-head axe. Using a K-tool and the adz end, a lock cylinder can easily be pulled. There are many other uses of the Halligan tool, including vehicle rescue and opening of walls. |
One of the most versatile tools in our asenal! I cannot say enough. This tool is my American Express card, I don't leave the truck without it!
On every apparatus on our department you will find one of these, whether truck or pumper. I would not come off the truck without a pick headed ax and a halligan tool
Great tool!! Both for forcable entry and teaching. I get more milage out of it at fire prevention than on actual fires.
The best tool in the fire service.
Tried and true. We have both the "quick bar" halligan, and the "pro bar" halligan. I prefer the pro bar the fork is skinnier which makes it easy to slip into tight places. Be it forcing a door or extrication the uses are limit less.
very usefull tool

We have two of these. One on each of our pumpers. They are a great tool. We use them for everything from car fires to house fires. They are also great for extricatiom as well.
