Ocean Gate police probing two arson cases
August 28, 2008
OCEAN GATE — Borough police are investigating two cases of arson they responded to over the
weekend, officials said.
According to Detective Barry Wohl, the first incident occurred in the 200 block of East Long Branch Avenue. Using newspapers and wood, someone started a fire under a shed in the backyard of a home. The debris from the shed blew out into the yard, and the fire was out by the time the homeowner noticed it at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Wohl.
The second incident, which occurred about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, took place in the 500 block of Newport Avenue. A neighbor alerted a homeowner that newspapers in a plastic bag were set on fire on the front porch, and the victim extinguished the fire.
Wohl said no injuries were reported from either fire. The homes are approximately 200 yards apart. No damage was sustained to the exterior of either house and no property damage was reported.
Wohl asks that residents report any suspicious activity to the police department,
particularly any people walking outside at late hours.
