Ex-Firefighter Torches NYC Firehouse as a "Prank"

NEW YORK – A former New York firefighter who torched a firehouse door as a prank has been sentenced to prison by a judge who said his actions were “beyond stupid.”

Michael Izzo apologized Thursday for the incident, which occurred at Engine 34’s quarters in Hell’s Kitchen on Oct. 27, 2007. He had pleaded guilty in March to felony reckless endangerment.

Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Laura Ward sentenced Izzo to one to three years in prison.

Firefighter Safety

Izzo’s co-defendant, 31-year-old Richard Capece, pleaded guilty in March to misdemeanor reckless endangerment. Ward sentenced him in May to five months in jail and 100 hours of community service.

The two admitted pouring a flammable liquid on the door to start the fire. Another firefighter saw smoke and alerted colleagues. No one was hurt.

we do play around at the fire house alot but y does some1 do that 2 a fire department,also when we here the tones go off we do not play we go and not play until the fire is out

I am always in "awe" over New York's finest (and before you all give me grief---I admire all of us) but for one of their own to do something so reckless and moronic--they ought to set an example of him. Didn't he stop to consider--what if...How did he get hired in the first place-unless this was just a case of a good guy gone bad???

The price isn'tt high enough. What was that ASS thinking, oh never mind, he wasn't thinking. He's frigging lucky the truck was in quarters, If they'd been out on a run, who knows how far it would've gone!!! Guys like that give FDNY a BAD reputation. Makes all the guys look like idiots. And I know theyre NOT.. Have alot of FD friends.

I completely disagree gbeard05. This man was a firefighter. He KNEW better. He knew what can, could, and might happen in starting that fire. With all this in mind, he definately should be held to a higher morality with all of the higher punishments that go along with it. I might have some sympathy for someone a lot younger and who doesn't FIGHT FIRES for a living who might have done something like that and then said I was stupid and I'm sorry, but not a firefighter!!!

Punishment was too high in my mind. I think he should have lost his job or maybe just suspension, but he should not have gone to prison for one to three years. I doubt he meant any real harm by it. Of coure he could have thought of a little less dangerous prank!

Stupid move man. I understand pranks in the fire house and all but that was stupid. Not sure he should've lost his job for it if no one was hurt...maybe he should have, I don't know...just a bonehead move...
